Building Shells: Building Community Toolkit for Newburgh’s Vacancies

Building Shells: Building Community is a preservation, policy and design project that explores how the community can work collectively to prevent historic buildings from becoming shells, and to use art as a way to reactivate existing building shells to encourage future redevelopment.
Story Screen: The Sixth Section
Saturday October 7 at 6:30pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. The Sixth Section opens a surprising window on immigration in the 21st century. Following a group of Mexican immigrants from the tiny desert town of Boqueron who now work in upstate New York. The Sixth Section is an intimate portrait of how the 'American Dream' is being redefined by today's immigrants.
Latinos in Preservation
Saturday October 7 at 5pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. Part of the Building Shells: Building Community project explored the Latinx leadership and engagement in historic preservation. Through the generosity of a grant, we were able to work with Enrique Silva to better understand historic preservation in Newburgh’s Latino community.
Look! Mira! Walking Tour: William Street
Saturday October 7 at 4pm at the (New)burgh Porch, 15 S. Johnston Street. The William Street walking tour celebrates the under-recognized architectural, historical and social gems of this corridor. The street first opened in the early 19th century to provide access to estates and pastures just on the fringes of what was then the Village of Newburgh. After decades of development the street matured into a rich corridor of European immigrant shops and houses. Stopping at modified buildings, active residences, and a building shell, we’ll learn of stories exemplifying this transition.
Demolition by Neglect: Saving a building in four days
Saturday October 7 at 2pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. Join Johanna Yaun and Joan Porr to hear how individuals and organizations have the power to save historic buildings in Newburgh. We’ll look at efforts to save the historic building at 242 Broadway and early efforts preservation efforts that happened during urban renewal in the 1970s.

(New)burgh Porch Ribbon Cutting
Friday October 6 at 5:30pm at the (New)burgh Porch, 15 S. Johnston Street. Designed by architect Joshua Jow, The (New)burgh Porch is a temporary art installation that interfaces with the architectural and cultural history of Newburgh and creates a space for conversation about the future. The project is designed to be an educational tool, teaching about the various elements of construction design and details, particularly related to the porch.

Open Call for Film Shorts
Deadline September 30 Story Screen and The Fullerton are partnering on a mini film festival for Archtober in Newburgh, NY. During the first weekend of October, we'll be exploring themes of urbanism, preservation, architecture, and more. We are issuing an open call for short films or documentaries to be featured. Content of films can fall into two categories: either urbanism or the Hudson Valley as a whole. Themes can explore personal history, arts, culture, science, and democracy/civics. Filmmakers do not need to be residing in the Hudson Valley to qualify for entry into the festival.
CityMaking: Kavita Das
How can we as community members use the written word to address pressing social issues? On November 3, 2022, The Fullerton will host author Kavita Das, author of Craft and Conscience: How to Write About Social Issues. Kavita will lead the group in a book talk, discussion, and writing exercises about exploring our individual motivations for writing about social issues.
This event will take place from 6pm to 8pm at Newburgh Art Supply.

How do Main Streets contribute to our mental health? On Thursday, October 27 2022 social psychiatrist and author Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove will discuss her recent book, Main Street: How a City's Heart Connects Us All.
This event will begin with a group walking tour down Broadway at 5pm followed by a virtual discussion with Dr. Fullilove at Gritworks at 6pm.
CityMaking: Melissa Checkers
Dr. Melissa Checker (PhD NYU, 2002) serves on the faculties of the PhD Program in Anthropology and Environmental Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. She is also the Hagedorn Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College. Her research focuses on the politics of urban sustainability, environmental racism, grassroots activism, and managed retreat. Her book, The Sustainability Myth: Environmental Gentrification and the Politics of Justice was published in 2020 .
